Sailing voyage Z01-27: Crossing the North Sea, sailtraining

Z01-27: Scotland Passage – Offshore Sailing Training & Tidal Navigation (580 nm)

This offshore sailing training voyage begins in the heart of Rotterdam with a unique first leg. We depart via the iconic Erasmus Bridge and follow the Nieuwe Waterweg towards Maassluis and, conditions permitting, Scheveningen. It is an excellent opportunity to settle into life on board, review safety procedures and enjoy a relaxed start to the voyage while experiencing Rotterdam from the water, surrounded by commercial shipping, container terminals and impressive bridges.

Along the way, we will learn how the VHF traffic sectors on the Nieuwe Waterweg operate and how one of Europe’s busiest vessel traffic management systems guides commercial shipping. Depending on tides and tidal streams, we will reach Maassluis after a few hours, where we can prepare for the upcoming passage planning and night sailing.

In the evening, we will create a passage plan together using the latest weather forecasts. Participants will learn how to interpret weather charts, identify frontal systems and translate meteorological information into practical decision-making at sea. Weather routing and marine meteorology form an important part of this offshore sailing course.

The following day, we begin our North Sea crossing towards Whitby on England’s east coast, a passage of approximately 230 nautical miles. Along the route we encounter traffic separation schemes, offshore platforms, wind farms and busy shipping lanes. This offshore passage provides excellent opportunities to practise radar navigation, AIS use, lookout procedures, navigation lights and night sailing.

Depending on the conditions, we will spend one or two nights at sea. The yacht operates on a watchkeeping system, ensuring that all crew members remain actively involved in navigation, sail handling and seamanship throughout the passage.

Whitby is a charming historic fishing port on the Yorkshire coast. If weather and timing allow, there may be time to explore the harbour town, visit the famous abbey or simply enjoy the atmosphere of this traditional English seaside community.

Throughout this offshore sailing training voyage, we use a three-watch system: three hours on watch followed by six hours off watch. This provides sufficient rest while keeping everyone alert and engaged, particularly during night watches.

After Whitby, we continue northwards along the English coast towards Scotland. This leg includes another overnight passage, providing further opportunities to practise offshore navigation, watchkeeping and passage making while keeping watch for commercial shipping, fishing vessels and offshore wind farms. The exact route remains dependent on weather, wind and tidal conditions. If circumstances allow, we may make a stop in the attractive harbour of Stonehaven.

This offshore sailing training voyage concludes in Stromness on the Orkney Islands. Before reaching our destination, however, we face one of the most famous tidal navigation challenges in Northern Europe: the passage through the Pentland Firth.

The Pentland Firth is renowned for its powerful tidal streams, which can exceed 10 knots in certain areas. It is also known for its overfalls, tidal races and eddies, making careful tidal planning essential. Together we will calculate the optimum departure time, analyse tidal stream information and apply the theory of tidal navigation in a real-world offshore environment. For many sailors, this is one of the most valuable and memorable learning experiences of the voyage.

Following a successful transit of the Pentland Firth, we enter Scapa Flow, one of the largest natural harbours in the world and a strategically important anchorage for centuries. Scapa Flow is steeped in maritime history. In 1919, much of the German High Seas Fleet was deliberately scuttled here by its own crews. During the Second World War, the battleship HMS Royal Oak was sunk in the anchorage by a German submarine.

In response to that attack, Winston Churchill ordered the construction of the famous Churchill Barriers, which closed the eastern entrances to Scapa Flow and continue to connect several of the islands today. The visible remains of both World Wars make Scapa Flow one of Europe’s most fascinating historic anchorages.

Finally, we arrive in Stromness, a characterful harbour town with a rich maritime heritage. Here we traditionally conclude the voyage with a meal and a well-earned pint in the local pub.

This offshore sailing training voyage combines passage making, night sailing, tidal navigation, weather routing, watchkeeping and practical seamanship with an unforgettable journey along the English and Scottish coastline. The combination of busy shipping routes, challenging tidal waters and long offshore passages makes this an ideal sailing course for those looking to expand their offshore experience and develop advanced navigation skills.

The itinerary described above is dependent on weather, wind and tidal conditions. If necessary, the route and schedule may be adjusted accordingly.

– Sailing clothes and boots, you can rent these from us if you would like.
– Possible shore excursions such as renting a van, or visiting a museum etc.
– Food and drinks ashore, the last evening we will go out for dinner and this will be at your own expense. ( Should you wish to treat the crew as a thank you for a lovely sailing holiday, it would of course be greatly appreciated!)
– Optional tips. These are, of course, entirely voluntary, but always appreciated. Any tips are shared between the skipper and crew, because the skipper is just as much a part of the team that makes the voyage possible. Contrary to what many guests assume, the Bosun/cook on board Cherokee is actually the highest-paid member of the crew.

Duration & Time on Board

The listed trip duration refers to full calendar days. Since you embark on the first evening and disembark on the final morning, your actual time on board is on average about 1.5 days shorter. We use this format to keep our trips comparable with other providers – but we like to be transparent about the real time you’ll spend on board.

Waarom zou u voor ons kiezen?

FAMILIEBEDRIJF
