The Faroe Islands are without doubt one of the most spectacular sailing destinations in Europe. Steep green mountains rise almost vertically from the sea, waterfalls plunge down dramatic cliffs and small villages with traditional turf-roofed houses lie hidden between deep fjords. The landscape is wild and unspoilt. Mist is almost always present, drifting like a veil between the mountains and deep fjords, while the ever-changing light gives the Faroe Islands a mysterious and almost fairy-tale atmosphere. It is no surprise that the Faroes are often called “Little Iceland” – but for sailors, they may be even more beautiful.
This longer sailing holiday gives us extra time to explore much more of the archipelago. Our aim is to discover the northern, western and southern Faroe Islands, allowing plenty of time not only for spectacular sailing, but also for longer hikes, charming villages and relaxed stops along the way.
Thanks to the many islands, fjords and sheltered sounds, there are usually beautiful sailing routes available even when the weather is changeable. Because the skipper knows the Faroe Islands sailing area inside out, we can adapt each day to the wind, weather, mist and tides.
Although the tidal range around the Faroe Islands is relatively small, tidal currents around headlands and at the entrances and exits of narrow sounds can be surprisingly strong. Careful timing is therefore essential. This allows us to choose the most beautiful and suitable route and experience the Faroe Islands at their very best.
During this sailing voyage we aim to visit a wide variety of islands. Each has its own character, from dramatic seabird cliffs and green mountain slopes to small fishing villages where time seems to have stood still. Traditional turf-roofed houses, thousands of free-roaming sheep and the complete absence of forests give the archipelago an almost fairy-tale appearance.
One of the absolute highlights is the spectacular Vestmanna Bird Cliffs. We sail close beneath hundreds of metres of basalt cliffs and past deep sea caves where thousands of seabirds nest and fly overhead.
Another unforgettable passage takes us around Tindhólmur and past Drangarnir, the famous natural sea arch that has become one of the iconic landmarks of the Faroe Islands. From the sea, this remarkable landscape is perhaps at its most impressive when the jagged peaks suddenly emerge from the mysterious mist.
The extra days of this sailing trip also give us time for longer hikes. From Klaksvík, we can take the ferry to the island of Kalsoy, where a spectacular hike to the famous Kallur Lighthouse may be on the programme.
The trail follows the narrow mountain ridge of the island and rewards us with breathtaking views over sheer cliffs, the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding islands. It is a demanding hike, but undoubtedly one of the most spectacular walks in the Faroe Islands.
The longer itinerary also gives us the opportunity to explore some of the southern islands. We may visit atmospheric Nólsoy, a small island just off Tórshavn with a character all of its own. Quiet lanes, colourful houses and the absence of through traffic create a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere that feels a world away from modern life.
On Suðuroy, the southernmost island of the Faroe Islands, we can make a beautiful coastal hike to an impressive sea cave. Afterwards, there is time for a well-earned coffee and homemade cake in a particularly cosy and authentic little café. It is exactly these small and unexpected experiences that make sailing around the Faroe Islands so special.
There is also plenty of time to explore the islands on foot. Depending on the weather and our route, we may hike to the famous Gásadalur waterfall, one of the most beautiful places in the Faroe Islands. Afterwards, we can enjoy coffee and homemade cake in a cosy café in a village that remained almost inaccessible for centuries because of its remote location.
Another possible highlight is a hike to the spectacular cliffs of Trælanípa. According to local tradition, Vikings are said to have thrown unwanted slaves from these cliffs. Next to the cliffs lies Leitisvatn, also known as the “Hanging Lake” or “Lake Above the Ocean”. This elevated lake flows into the Atlantic through the spectacular Bøsdalafossur waterfall.
The combination of the “hanging lake”, dramatic cliffs and the open ocean creates one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the Faroe Islands.
Nature lovers will have plenty to enjoy. Puffins, fulmars, great skuas, guillemots and white-tailed eagles are frequently seen. With a little luck, we may even encounter dolphins or whales while sailing between the islands.
At this time of year, darkness barely falls, making the days wonderfully long. After sailing, there is often still plenty of time for a walk, exploring a village or simply enjoying the extraordinary light over the mountains and ocean from the deck of the yacht.
This longer Faroe Islands sailing holiday combines spectacular sailing, dramatic nature, beautiful hikes and the opportunity to discover both the well-known and lesser-known islands of the archipelago. It is ideal for sailors and nature lovers who want to take their time and truly experience the Faroe Islands rather than simply pass through them.
The combination of the Vestmanna Bird Cliffs, Drangarnir and Tindhólmur, the hike to Kallur Lighthouse, atmospheric Nólsoy, the rugged landscapes of Suðuroy and the spectacular scenery of Vágar makes this one of the most complete ways to discover the Faroe Islands by sailing yacht.
Daily sailing distances are generally between 10 and 30 nautical miles. The exact route and destinations depend on weather, wind, mist and tidal conditions. If circumstances require it, the itinerary may be adjusted accordingly.

★★★★★
