From the historic harbour of Scalloway in Shetland, we set course westward. Depending on the weather forecast, we may first make a short passage to one of the smaller harbours in the Shetland Islands. This provides a relaxed opportunity to become familiar with the yacht, the crew and life on board before setting off across the North Atlantic towards the Faroe Islands.
The main passage then begins: approximately 200 nautical miles of open-water sailing to the Faroes. We sail day and night using a watch system, with everyone actively involved in sailing, navigation and keeping watch. This route follows the same northern waters once sailed by the Vikings more than a thousand years ago.
One of the most remarkable aspects of this voyage is its northern latitude. At this time of year, darkness barely arrives. Even in the middle of the night, a soft glow remains on the horizon. The Vikings called this phenomenon Simmer Dim: an endless summer twilight where the boundary between day and night seems to disappear. Night sailing takes on an entirely different character under these conditions and is one of the unique features of a voyage this far north.
When the rugged outlines of the Faroe Islands slowly emerge from the mist, it is an arrival few sailors will ever forget. Steep green mountains rise directly from the sea, offering a first glimpse of the spectacular landscapes that make this archipelago so special.
Our aim is to make landfall on Suðuroy, the southernmost of the Faroe Islands. If conditions allow, we will have several days to explore this remarkable island. Beautiful walks lead along dramatic cliffs, hidden coves and spectacular viewpoints overlooking the North Atlantic.
One of the highlights is a walk to an impressive sea cave, followed by a visit to a wonderfully cosy local café for coffee and homemade cake. The combination of rugged scenery, colourful villages and a relaxed island atmosphere makes Suðuroy a favourite destination for many visitors.
The Faroe Islands are among the most impressive island groups in Europe. Their green mountains, towering cliffs, low-hanging clouds and ever-changing light create a landscape that feels both dramatic and mysterious. With very few trees and limited development, the islands retain a sense of wilderness that is increasingly rare elsewhere in Europe.
We conclude the voyage in Tórshavn, one of the world’s smallest capitals. On arrival, we pass the iconic red wooden buildings with their traditional grass roofs, which look almost like an open-air museum. Yet these historic buildings still form the political heart of the Faroe Islands and have housed the Faroese government for centuries. The picturesque harbour, narrow streets and welcoming cafés make Tórshavn a wonderful place to end the voyage.
This passage making voyage is ideal for active sailors who enjoy longer offshore passages. The combination of a North Atlantic crossing, watchkeeping, the unique light of the Simmer Dim and the spectacular arrival in the Faroe Islands makes this one of the most memorable sailing voyages of the season.
Daily distances during this voyage range from approximately 20 to 200 nautical miles, depending on weather and routing.
The itinerary described above is dependent on weather, wind and sea conditions. If necessary, the route may be adjusted accordingly.

Included in the price:
– Food and drinks on board.
– Fuel, water, shore power, harbour fees and tourist tax.
– 1 towel set and bedding incl. duvet and, of course, a life jacket.
– For after sailing there is also wine and beer on board, based on average use. Should we run out, then you can purchase more yourself.
Not included:
– Your transfer, meaning your journey to and from the ship
– Sailing clothes and boots, you can rent these from us if you would like.
– Possible shore excursions such as renting a van, or visiting a museum etc.
– Food and drinks ashore, the last evening we will go out for dinner and this will be at your own expense. ( Should you wish to treat the crew as a thank you for a lovely sailing holiday, it would of course be greatly appreciated!)
– Optional tips. These are, of course, entirely voluntary, but always appreciated. Any tips are shared between the skipper and crew, because the skipper is just as much a part of the team that makes the voyage possible. Contrary to what many guests assume, the Bosun/cook on board Cherokee is actually the highest-paid member of the crew.

★★★★★
